Training is available in many areas and on many different levels. Training in traffic control, communications, family assistance, urban evacuation, armory takeover and disaster response are just some of the areas in which the Virginia State Defense Force specializes. All new members will receive basic orientation training and an individual appraisal of your skills. Members are required to attend one training assembly (drill) per month consisting of six (6) hours dedicated to additional training opportunities. Additionally, two (2) Multi-Unit Training Assemblies (MUTA) are held during weekends in the spring (April/May) and fall (October/November) at the State Military Reservation in Virginia Beach, Fort Pickett in Blackstone, or Fort A.P. Hill in Bowling Green.

These training assemblies allow members to apply their training in a practical setting. Advance training is also offered through a Radio Operators Course, a Non-Commissioned Officers Leadership Development Course, Company Leadership Course, Operational Staff Command, Control and Communications Course and Advanced Leaders Courses and FEMA IS Courses. These courses are offered for those members who desire to assume a more responsible position within the organization.
